Summary: Guide to setting up the BT1800HG wireless router
This guide shows you how to get the BT1800HG Intelligent Gateway installed on your Windows Vista computer. For help with installation on different operating systems see the BT1800HG Userguide. You will need to refer to the username and password information noted in the Broadband Connection Details page.

2. Setting up your hardware1. Plug one of the provided microfilters into your telelphone socket. There should be a microfilter fitted to each extension on your line that is in use by a telephone device. See our Guide To Fitting Microfilters. 2. Plug the black telephone cable into your microfilter socket marked DSL. 3. Plus the other end of the black telephone cable into the phone socket on the back of the router. 4. Plug the Power Adapter into an active mains socket. 5. Plug the other end of the Power Adapter into the back of the router. 6. The router will automatically switch on and attempt to connect to your computer or Local Network, as well as your broadband service.
7. Watch for the Broadband Link light turning orange. This will show that your broadband service has been found, but still needs to be setup. See the troubleshooting section for more information about what your router lights mean.
3. Setting up your broadband connection using EthernetFollow this section if you want to connect your router using a network cable. You should also use these instructions if you have difficulties setting up using the wireless option. If you want to use the wireless connection see the next section - Setting up your broadband connection using wireless 1. Connect the yellow Ethernet cable to your router.
2. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to the back of the network socket of your computer. 3. Open a browser program (e.g. Internet Explorer). 4. On the address line type gateway.2wire.net or if this doesn't work try the IP address 192.168.1.254
5. The router's control screens will appear. Click Broadband Link, then click Advanced Settings.

7. In the Broadband Network section type in your full broadband username and your account password.
8. In the Confirm Password field retype your password again to confirm you have not mistyped it. 9. Click on Save. Congratulations, your router will now connect to your broadband service. The broadband light on the front of the router will turn solid green to confirm that you have connected successfully. See the troubleshooter section if this doesn't happen within a few minutes.
4. Setting up your broadband connection using USBFollow this section if you want to connect your router using a USB cable. Connecting your computer to the router using USB requires a spare USB port. Only one Windows or Macintosh computer can be directly connected to the router using this method. 1. Download the PC USB Driver File to your hard drive. Double click on the install file and save the driver files onto your hard drive. Make a note of where these files have been saved - you will need to use them in step 3. 2. Shut your PC down and connect your router to the PC using the blue USB cable. 3. Restart your PC. You may be shown an Add Hardware Wizard prompt, if so you will need to select recommended default settings. If prompted to identify where to search for drivers, select to browse the location of the files that were saved in step 1.
4. Once the driver has been installed click Close. The Setup Wizard will begin again when your PC has been shutdown and restarted.
5. Once your PC has been restarted, your BT1800HG router will connect using the USB cable. You can proceed with the setup of your router from step 3 on the Ethernet setup section.
5. Setting up your broadband connection using wirelessThe BT1800HG Intelligent Gateway supports wireless "WiFi" access using a computer or device that has a wireless adapter. To connect your computer using a wireless link, firstly you'll to make sure that your wireless access card is properly installed in your computer. You should also make sure that your router has been setup and is plugged in and powered up. 1. Windows Vista shows an icon in the task tray to confirm that your wireless adapter is installed. Run your mouse over the network icon and right-click with the mouse to bring up a menu.
2. You will be given a list of available wireless networks. Providing your wireless adapter is installed, and your BT1800 router is switched on, you should see a network called 2WIRExxx (where the xxx will be a number).
3. Click on the network to connect to it. The router has been setup with wireless security enabled. For this reason you will not be able to connect until you type in the wireless encryption key. This is written at the bottom of a label which is underneath your router.
4. You will now be connected to your wireless router.
