1. Before you begin
This guide will take you through setting up your SpeedTouch 716WL router from scratch and applies to both Windows and Apple OS X systems.
Make sure your broadband connection is up and running before you set up your router - we'll email you when it's ready.
If you have another broadband modem installed on your computer it must be uninstalled before continuing.
[Top]2. Connecting Microfilters & Cables
Microfilters
Microfilters look small and unimportant but theyre essential for keeping your phone and Internet services from interfering with each other. Without microfilters you'll see poor speeds and connection drops
- Plug a microfilter into each telephone socket that's used at your property
- If you had to unplug something you can plug it back into the Phone socket of the microfilter
- If you need more filters, you can order them from us or buy them from most electrical or computer stores
- See our Guide To Fitting Microfilters if you need more help with this
Cables
- Plug the grey broadband cable into the microfilter socket marked ADSL
- Plug the other end of the cable into the DSL socket on the back of the router
- Connect the power supply and switch the router on with the power button at the back
For VoIP calls, plug your telephone handset into one of two green-coloured ports labelled Phone. You may need to use one of the RJ11 (white) adapters in order to plug your telephone into the router.
To use the telephone to make regular calls you must connect the (white) PSTN socket to the Phone socket on the microfilter. Without this cable attached you will not be able to make calls when the router is switched off.
[Top]3. Connecting to your Computer
Now it's time to connect the router to your computer.
You can use either Wireless or Ethernet. Choose one of these and follow the steps below.
Wireless
- Make sure that your computer's wireless adapter is installed and working properly
- On your computer do a scan for available wireless networks
- The name of your network will be the SSID listed on the bottom of the router, select it and click the Connect button
- Your computer is now connected to the network, move onto the next section, Connecting to the Internet
Ethernet
- Plug the yellow Ethernet cable into one of the 4 available Ethernet sockets on the back of your router
- Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into your computer's Ethernet socket
- Your computer is now connected to the network. Move onto the next section, Connecting to the Internet
4. Connecting to the Internet
- On your computer, open a Web Browser, such as Internet Explorer or Safari. If you don't see the welcome page or you get a page cannot be displayed error, type http://192.168.1.254 into your browser's address bar and press enter on your keyboard.
Access to your router settings is protected with a username and password. By default the username is Administrator and the password is blank. You can change these later to secure your settings from tampering. Next select Easy Setup from the menu.
-
Select service. This will determine if you wish to setup just your broadband connection or your VoIP/Broadband Phone access as well. If you already have your Broadband Phone account active, select Router (1-line), otherwise select Router (no lines), you return later to add your Broadband Phone settings. Click Next to continue.
-
Type in your Broadband Username and Password and click Next.
- Find your Broadband Username under Connection Settings in the Member Centre.
- The Password is the one that you use to log in to this website.
- Finally you'll see a summary screen. Have a quick check through the settings to make sure everything is correct. Use the Back button if there's anything you need to change. Press Start to finish the setup wizard and connect to broadband.
-
If you selected Router (No-line) in step 2, that's it! You're connected to Broadband.
If you selected Router (1-line) you'll need to enter your Broadband Phone settings. If you'd rather setup Broadband Phone later you can edit them in the Telephony section of the configuration screens.
You should complete your Broadband Phone settings as follows:
- Broadband Phone/VoIP settings
- Registrar: sip.plus.net
- Proxy Server: nat.plus.net
- Registrar Port: 5060
- Proxy Port: 5082
- Expire Time: 3600
- SIP URI: Your SIP number
- Username: Your SIP number
- Password: Your broadband phone password
You can find your SIP number in the Broaband Phone Control Panel
-
For your changes to take effect you should restart your router. To do this you can go to the SpeedTouch Section of your router configuration screen and select Restart from the Pick a task list.
-
That's it! You're connected to Broadband. If you completed step 5, you're also ready to make VoIP calls.
5. Wireless Security
By default, wireless security is switched off on the SpeedTouch 716WL. If you're using wireless you should turn security on as soon as possible. If you're not using wireless then you should turn it off. See the SpeedTouch 716WL instruction book for help with this.
